Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths from 2005 to 2009 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms, or no working smoke alarms.
Smoke Detectors Save Lives
Most fatal fires occur at night when people are sleeping. A working smoke alarm will detect smoke and sound an alarm, which gives you and your family precious moments to escape from the building. You should install smoke alarms on every level of your home and near areas where people sleep. If people sleep with closed doors, install the alarm inside the room.
Test Your Alarm Regularly
Set a time every month when you check your alarms to make sure they’re working properly. Make the rounds to check each alarm in your home. This simple task could mean the difference between life and death if a fire breaks out in your house.
A good rule of thumb is to change the batteries in your smoke alarms at the same time each year, perhaps each spring or each fall. If the alarm starts beeping, that means you need a new battery, whether or not it’s your usual time to change batteries.
Replace Old Alarms
Smoke alarms do wear out, so plan to replace your alarms at least every 10 years. Write the date inside the alarm cover so you can remember how old it is.
